At Myofunctional Therapy of Austin, we specialize in improving oral function through personalized therapy that supports nasal breathing, ideal tongue posture, and functional swallow to improve overall wellness for children and adults.
Our therapy is designed to correct improper oral habits, improve overall function, and create long-term health benefits. We take a comprehensive, whole-body approach to ensure lasting results.
Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is a type of therapy that focuses on the muscles of the face and mouth. It helps improve how these muscles work, especially those involved in breathing, chewing, swallowing, and speaking.
Myofunctional Therapy of Austin specializes in neuromuscular re-education of the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue to improve breathing, swallow pattern, and overall oral function.
By correcting oral muscle imbalances, myofunctional therapy can enhance breathing efficiency, support orthodontic treatment (braces and expansion outcomes), and contribute to overall health and wellness.
Through personalized therapy, we help address a wide range of concerns that impact oral and overall health. These include mouth breathing and nasal hygiene, sleep hygiene, and tongue thrust swallow patterns. We also support clients dealing with sleep-disordered breathing, including snoring and sleep apnea, as well as those experiencing jaw tension, TMJ pain, clenching, and teeth grinding (bruxism). Our therapy can assist in preventing orthodontic relapse and promoting tongue posture correction for a more stable bite and beautiful smile. We work to identify and improve dysfunctional breathing patterns, compensation patterns, and orofacial muscle imbalances, all with an emphasis on restoring proper muscular harmony within the orofacial complex.
The IAOM defines Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders as inappropriate behaviors and patterns in muscle function involving the tongue, lips, jaw, and face, potentially leading to issues with breathing, swallowing, and speech.
Mouth breathing, Tongue Thrusting, Dental Misalignment, Open Mouth posture, Abnormal Swallowing pattern, Sleep issues such as snoring or sleep apnea, Non-nutritive sucking such as thumb sucking, finger sucking, and tongue sucking, bed-wetting, food aversions
At Myofunctional Therapy of Austin, our treatment is based on four core principles:
Encouraging proper breathing patterns to support oxygen intake and airway health.
Strengthening the facial muscles to maintain correct oral rest posture.
Positioning the tongue correctly against the palate for improved function and facial development.
Training the tongue and orofacial muscles to work in harmony for a more efficient swallow to avoid TMJ dysfunction.
